Document encryption + rights management

Protect PDFs and manage usage rights

PDF DRM links document access to an authorization policy. Readers need a license and must open the encrypted document in ZJGet; possession of a copied file does not grant reading rights. You can set viewing and printing permissions for your publishing or training business.

01 / ENCRYPT

Local PDF encryption

Encrypt documents on your computer with the DRM-X 5.0 encryption client using AES-based encryption. The documents do not need to be uploaded to DRM-X servers during encryption.

02 / AUTHORIZE

License-based reading

Specify which users can access protected documents, how long access lasts, and which permissions apply, including printing and virtual-printer restrictions.

03 / IDENTIFY

Personalized watermarks

Display identifying information while users read. On Windows and Mac, authorized printouts also retain the user-identifying watermark.

PDF security features

Control document copying, printing, and access

Combine document controls, license permissions, and endpoint security settings to suit your readers.

Prevent clipboard copying

Restrict copying document text to the clipboard to reduce direct extraction through copy-and-paste operations.

Printing permissions

Allow or disable printing and set a maximum print count. Meet legitimate paper-use needs while controlling the number of copies.

Block virtual printers

Where supported, restrict virtual printing methods such as “Print to PDF” to reduce risk.

Screenshot and screen recording protection

Combine Smart Prevent Screen Recording and blacklist controls to reduce capture risks. On Windows, supported screenshot and recording attempts can capture only a black screen.

Time-limited reading

Set license start and expiration times, or a validity period beginning at first use. You can also limit the number of opens when needed.

Device binding

Limit the number of devices a user account can authorize. An appropriate device policy helps reduce account sharing.

License revocation

Revoke issued licenses by user or license profile when permissions change, an order is refunded, or distribution rules are violated.

Display output restrictions

Enterprise accounts can enable “Only One Display Allowed.” Wireless casting restrictions add further control over document output.

Environment restrictions

Use supported virtual machine and cloud desktop restrictions to reduce access through environments with additional recording risks.

Feature availability depends on the account plan, operating system, and ZJGet version. Review the DRM-X 5.0 plan comparison ; single-display restrictions may affect multi-monitor use.

Identity protection on screen and in print

One PDF, different users, individually watermarked printouts

The same encrypted PDF can display a different identifying watermark for each authorized user. You do not need to create a separate document for every reader.

On Windows and Mac, printed pages retain the user's identifying watermark when printing is allowed. This helps discourage unauthorized sharing and provides a lead for tracing a leaked paper copy.

  • ✓Choose identifying information such as a username or user ID.
  • ✓Combine identifying watermarks with printing permissions and print-count limits.

Watermarks help deter and trace leaks but cannot eliminate every risk of photography or photocopying.

From document encryption to authorized reading

How to protect a PDF with DRM-X 5.0

Set document rights

Create a license profile and choose the reading period, printing permissions, and security settings.

Encrypt the PDF

Select the appropriate license profile and encrypt the file locally with the DRM-X 5.0 encryption client.

Distribute the encrypted file

Provide a download link to the encrypted PDF. Users can download it and open it securely in ZJGet on their local device.

Authorize the reader

After obtaining a license, users read the document under the permissions you set.

Verify users and apply authorization rules through your website

Integrate PDF licensing with your website or LMS

DRM-X 5.0 provides XML Web Service APIs for integration with websites, online stores, membership systems, and learning management systems (LMS).

When a user requests a license, your platform checks eligibility, then uses the DRM-X APIs to update permissions and obtain a license. This connects protected document access to your existing business rules.

Authorization examples

  • ✓Confirm that a research report order is valid.
  • ✓Verify active membership or subscription status.
  • ✓Check course enrollment before issuing a handout license.
  • ✓Apply the appropriate access period and user-identifying watermark.
